The health and well-being of our employees, customers, and our neighborhoods remains our top priority. We continue to monitor the ever-changing property tax landscape we are facing, as well as the recommendations of government officials and local entities. We will provide you with the latest updates as they are available.

In an effort to ensure that our employees and customers have the best chance to avoid contracting or spreading Coronavirus, our home office located at 1700 Pacific Avenue, Suite 4610, Dallas, Texas 75201 will be closed for the foreseeable future. All employees are continuing to conduct all business virtually through phone, fax, and email. Any customers are requested to call or email any requests to avoid personal contact. The last ten weeks have been a whirlwind of news, rumors, and a continued state of emergency due to COVID-19. Unfortunately, and to the dismay of property owners, the area of property tax has not enjoyed immunity from this unprecedented disaster. At the beginning of the pandemic, property owners held out hope that governmental relief would extend all the way to their property tax bills, but that has not happened yet. This update will briefly discuss the difficulties involved in granting property tax relief, efforts thus far, and future opportunities.

To avoid accidentally waiving their right to protest a property value, an owner who does not receive a Notice of Appraised Value by May 15th should file a protest on their property if they believe their values should be lower than the prior year’s assessment.

One week ago, the Texas Attorney General issued an opinion on Texas Tax Code § 11.35 stating that the statute does not cover purely economic damage caused by COVID-19 to properties. Since the release of that opinion, more and more appraisal districts have claimed not to take the economic impact into account for the 2020 tax year and are claiming that any economic damage caused by COVID-19 should be reflected in the 2021 property values
