As anticipated, Texas Attorney General, Greg Abbott released his Opinion to the public on April 13th to clarify questions asked about the eligibility of a disabled veterans’ surviving spouses for a homestead property tax exemption under section 11.131 of the Tax Code.

The Attorney General held that the exemption applied retroactively as well, adding to the benefits of the exemption.  In addition, the surviving spouse of a fully disabled veteran would continue to receive the benefits even if the veteran died during the 2011 tax year before the law was passed.
